The College Student's Dilemma

1) I am tired.
2) I have class.
3) If I go to class, I will still be tired, and I have a paper to work on.
4) Crap, I forgot my postlab was due.

*brushes teeth and hair, finds clean underwear.*

1) I'll just nap after class.
2) But I have that paper to work on.
3) But am sleepy now.
4) But if I sleep now, I might be too awake to sleep before work.
5) But if I don't sleep now, I might not be productive on my paper.
6) So maybe I should just stay awake and work on the paper instead of nap.

This is where Matt stepped in and screamed "NAP."

I love songs about stodgyness

A dull and dreary day.
What else can you say?
"Eustice, you’re always such a bore."
Why, thank you, Isadore."
"They say a door is nothing on its own;
it must lead somewhere.
I’d like to go somewhere.

We could go for a look-about in the attics and the closed rooms
find diaries and letters of long-dead distant lovers.
It’d be just like when we were children sneaking all around
we wouldn’t make a sound;
they’d beat us black and blue if we were found,
but they can’t touch us now!

"Izzy, don’t mean to be a bore
but really Isadore.
You know these grey days make me blue.
I don’t know what to do.
No...there’s nothing I want to do."

The dull and dreary day becomes a dark and stormy night.
"Eustice, we could go outside and bottle fireflies.
Fairy lamps burn bright
in the face of stormy night
and the old black umbrella
could keep us from all harm.

We could go to the lichyard and see what there’s to see.
Maybe a cabal meets underneath the banyan trees.
It’d be just like when we were children sneaking all around
we wouldn’t make a sound;
we thought they’d reach out from their graves and drag us down,
but they don’t scare us now!"

"Izzy, don’t mean to be a drag
but I’ll do no such thing;
I’m staying in this chair.
I’d probably break my neck
falling in an open grave
or catch some horrid, fatal ache."

"Oh Eustice, come with me; come outside.
It’ll be all right."

Interesting.

I seem to have become the work whipping boy. Big boss likes to send me e-mails telling me everything I did wrong with my shift summaries, but today we've moved on to something bigger and better.

Now I'm being e-mailed for things wrong with other people's shift summaries! Observe:

2124 – Note: Two students were able to open the library doors after hours when the status was set to card only.

How do we know this? Who are they? Who called?

My shift started at 2200. -.-

4.25.2008

Whee!

I got a letter from a Buddhist nun today thanking me for all my donations and inviting me to visit their monastery.

I may have squeed.

4.24.2008

It's 5 AM

I have a headache and feel like I am going to puke!

God, I love my job. When am I ever going to get sleep?

::EDIT::
I have figured out why the phrase "students of color" annoys me so much. Do I not have a color? Or am I suddenly literally, scientifically, white? Also, what about people who are white but culturally different, like South Africans or second/third generation American emigrants (which do exist)? Do they not get to be supported by the campus multicultural committee because they reflect light?

White people: Too fucking shiny. I'm sick of people looking at me, seeing a WASP, and assuming I know nothing about racism thanks to my sheltered upper-middle-class upbringing.

This has been a weird semester for "campus diversity", and I blame guilty white liberals. (Oh, see that irony there? XD)

4.22.2008

It's like a marathon

The end of the semester is doing its thing, and I am still trying to find my work ethic. So, a general update:

  1. Matt and I sign our leases on Friday. In the meantime, I need to find a way to scrape the pet deposit together and get a new copy of my credit card so I can eat until I get paid again. I am hoping with graduation will come my family bearing large, green bills. (>.<)
  2. Summer financial aid is taken care of, so I have a little more time to get loans together. The sooner the better, though, because see 1). Also, Daryl applied for patrol, and I am hoping Big Boss will consent to let us work together over the summer. That would be amazing, since he and I spend 40 hours a week around each other as it is, so I know he won't drive me insane.
  3. I have told both my aunt and uncle about graduation stuff. Got my ticket for the Senior Brunch (which I need to find), and dutifully told them both about it. Aunt has no interest in attending, but Unc is surprisingly gung-ho about the entire deal and wants to go to everything.
  4. On those lines, Unc is also asking me to head back to STL soon and get everything ready to take to my apartment here. Apparently he has "a lot of furniture" for me to sort through, and I can take what I please. He sounded oddly excited. I hope a large set of towels is included in the bargain.
  5. Also on those lines, Fam will be coming here straight from Amsterdam, which means entire ceremony will be her jet-lagged, or jet-lagged and ranting about Amsterdam and how multicultural she is. Since High School Graduation was all about how Claire had done on her developmental tests, this is par for the course.
  6. My hair has been re-dyed a new fun color since I discovered it will cost me at least $200 to become a brunette again without risk of baldness (either from fallout or the peanut.) Pics when I have time to breathe.
  7. Attempting to become a plant for three days prior to my Plant Phys exam was only seven points more effective than not studying at all. New tactic: FUCK IT.
  8. Powers of bullshit, however, are as strong as ever. I got an A on my Blake paper, which I can add to a growing list of other As in that class. It certainly looks like I know what is going on.
  9. Have discovered the wonders of spray salad dressings. Is normal salad dressing, but thanks to delivery method, is nice and light, coats evenly, and has roughly twelve thousand fewer calories. Now just need to discover lettuce that is secretly made of meat.
  10. List posts are still boring to write.

4.17.2008

In case you were wondering:

It's official

I need to start listening to my instincts again. Here are two small examples:

1) At work on Tuesday, I put the panda hat back on after thinking "I should leave it off until 6PM in case he comes back." Well, he came back, and was not happy to see the hat.

2) A few hours ago, I had the compulsion to get my bag ready for work in case I had no time beforehand. Turns out, alarm wasn't set properly, so I had no time beforehand.

There have been so many more, but my brain is still asleep and I have homework to do.

4.16.2008

Dear Sanford Liquid Accent Highlighters:

When I started Uni freshman year, there were ten of you. Now I am down to four. As soon as I start grad school I am buying a brand new pack, because let's face it: you and your vivid colors are what got me through undergrad.

Ten colors allows an OCD person like me to color-code to my heart's content. Freshman year the coding was by class. This year, it was by category: bills are red, incomplete work was green, meetings and appointments are yellow, work is purple, classwork is blue, and special weeks/days/events are coral.

Until it died, all actual highlighted work was orange. Or, if I was feeling particularly creepy, whatever color my hair was.

The closer I am to death, the more colorful my planner is, and it at once amuses me and keeps me focused.

Thank you, Sanford. I love you and what you do!

4.15.2008

Buzzkill.

Big Boss: "What is your hat supposed to be?"
Wren: "It's a panda."
Big Boss: "Did a dye job go badly last night?"
Wren: "I've had this hat for years."
Big Boss: "That's an avoidance question."
Wren: "No, but I am planning on redying my hair on Wednesday after the exam."
Bossman Prime: "Is that in celebration?"
Wren: "No, it's more of a 'yay, I have time!' thing."
Big Boss: "I should get a hat. An enormous pumpkin."
Wren: "Yes, you should."

The office suddenly goes deadly silent. This is a feat, since there are eight people standing three feet away from this conversation.

Big Boss: "What do you think people would do if I wore that around at work?"
Wren: "I think they'd find you quite cheerful."
Big Boss: "Really."
Wren: "Oh, certainly."
Big Boss: "What if someone was running in here, and their child was dying, and they saw you in a panda hat."
Wren: "Then the panda hat would be the least of their worries."

Big Boss: "Wren, I am trying to be as nice as possible about this. Are you having a bad hair day or something?"
Wren: "Big Boss, if you want me to take the hat off, tell me to take the hat off."
Big Boss: "..."
Wren: "I'm taking the hat off."

Ten minutes after I get told I have the apartment and can sign the lease next week.

Recover or repeat?

Sometimes I wonder if I am turning into my family, and that I am never going to be content.

"Oh, I'll be happy if I get my apartment, my boy, and get into grad school."

But what if I'm NOT? Am I happy now? If no, why not?

God, attaching my happiness to goals is so damn stupid. That's what is going to turn me into Fam.

4.14.2008

These are words, and they keep happening.

I could count the reasons I want to go to lab on the fingers of a quadriplegic amputee.

4.13.2008

What I go through at work:

Here is what I wrote:

Note: A student called to report a group of five or six students being very loud in Anderson/Langdon quad. One of them is a “flailing naked dude,” and they are creating quite a disturbance. 008 and 007 responded. 0128 The CSOs contacted the students and asked them to be more quiet. Everyone appeared to be fully clothed.
And here is what I should desperately, desperately wanted to have written:
Note: A student called to report a group of five or six students being very loud in Anderson/Langdon quad. One of them is a “flailing naked dude,” and they are creating quite a disturbance. 008 and 007 responded. 0128 The CSOs contacted the students and asked them to be more quiet. Everyone appeared to be fully clothed and free of flail. I suggested my bosses check in the bushes, as we may now have a naked student at large on campus, but they seemed oddly uninterested in tracking him down.

4.11.2008

Hmm.

I think I'm ready to go back to being a brunette.

4.10.2008

I want to be in bed. So!

Basil and Co 138

In which Wren discusses her VAGINA.

Seriously. And, because I am polite, there is spoiler text. :D

About this time last year I went on medication for bipolar I disorder. About a month into that, we realized that my birth control pills, that I had been on for three years and loved so very much, were no longer going to function properly thanks to enzyme competition (I will not wax poetic here involving enzyme sites and uptake rates.) Now, I am not actually on birth control for the sex. I'm on it to deal with yet another medical disorder which causes the lining of my uterus to thicken and cysts to develop in my fallopian tubes and other such ridiculously wrong nonsense. Biologically, this translates to vastly irregular periods that are very painful and involve a lot of blood. A lot. of blood.

So, I'd gone through that in high school, and was pretty used to this "yay, my nethers are behaving normally! :D" Unfortunately, in all honesty, it was is more important for my brain to be behaving normally. My psychiatrist went "oh, it's fine, we'll just find some other sort of birth control."

And thus began the long and often scary quest I have fondly titled "How Many Bizarre Things Can I Stick in My Vay-Jay-Jay?" (My personal favorite was the plastic ring I was supposed to just wedge up there for three weeks at a time and ignore.)

Unfortunately, plastic ring or pill, they all were working with the exact same enzymes that were no longer available thanks to the bipolar disorder medication. My psychiatrist's response? "Just use condoms." My response? "I'm thinking that's a bad idea."

And then I had my first real period off the meds. No one died, luckily, but several pints of ice cream bore the brunt of my rage. "Fuck this," my newly-sane brain said, and my rather pissed-off poon agreed. So off to the gynecologist we went! (Which is anatomically logical, but still amusing to say.)

I explained my problems to her, and her response was "Don't worry about it! We deal with this all the time. We'll just give you an IUD!"

For the record, crotches wince.
But, after some explanation, things settled down a bit. They're not made from copper anymore, but a nice, innocuous plastic that secretes progesterone. I get it put in and can leave it be for six years, and that's it. Even better, there is a good chance I will stop having periods completely. Granted, it is still a T-shaped piece of plastic just chilling in my uterus, but better that than babies.

How could I say no? I'll spare you the details of its insertion. Know simply that I am NEVER having children and walking was the only thing that was painless for four days.

My housemates (who also have vaginas, or at least like vaginas enough to talk to me about mine) quickly dubbed my IUD Gandalf-- "YOU SHALL NOT PASS." Trust me, all the parallels between the bridge, the Balrog, and any possible joke involving orcs have been made, so shut up. (Also, you're welcome for that image. There's spoiler text for a reason!)

Gandalf and I didn't get along at first. I was told I might have "some spotting" for the first two months, but nothing prepared me for the constant existence of blood where blood should not be. Three months. Three months of me going "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, VAGINA, GIVE UP!" Or, "THE SWORD JOKES WERE METAPHORICAL, GANDALF." At this point the rats still lived in the bathroom, so these outbursts garnered multiple pairs of beady-eyed stares. More than once I considered taking the damn thing out and just getting an ablation.

But! But! It's finally paying off! I've not had a period in two months, which makes me beyond happy.

Unfortunately, I discovered last night that while I may not actually bleed anymore, I still have a sort of PMS where I sacrifice chocolate ice cream to the random craving gods. With a diabolical frequency.

All in all, though, I'd say it's worth it.

*devours pint*

4.09.2008

Sorry, I usually keep my gaming dorkage separate, but I need opinions.

Pop over here, read the question, gimme an answer in the comments, then forget I even asked.

Thanks!

In 24 hours we know if we got the apartment

Me: "I think we have this."
Matt: "Yeah, I agree!"
Me: "It's like this is God saying 'I don't really hate you, I just really like watching you squirm, so here's something nice to squirm in.'"
Car: *silence*
Me: "Oh, that was wrong."
Matt: "So, do tell!"

Post Flood

When I was in high school, I took washable blacklight paint and attacked the blades of my fan. On each one I painted a stripe of a color, making each blade 's edge either red, yellow, green, blue, or purple. When the fan turned on, viola! multicolored disc on ceiling. I used to turn it on, strip down to my underwear, hop on my bunk bed, and write in my journal while listening to Rob Zombie.

Now every time I listen to industrial music I want that fan back.

Ack.

Note to self: Do not ask coworker if he'd make a better dominant or a submissive.
(At least I didn't follow it up with "Want to find out for sure?") <--FILTER IN USE HERE.

Bzuh.

I don't know why, and I don't know how,
but too many people like me right now.

I just want one of them.

Ah-hahaha!

Chewing chips at people in lecture never ceases to be amusing.

They CAN be taught!

Me: "Bet you money my family doesn't return my call today even though I left them a message saying they had to."
Fourive People: "Hell no. I am not insane."

Excellent work!

Epiphany

Matt and I are apartment-hunting today, looking for a place to live for grad school and beyond. I was going about it like a college student, looking for places close to campus.

Then I had an epiphany.

I could have a dishwasher. And a patio. And a fucking fitness center. I mean, we're gonna be here for a while! This isn't a subletting deal. This is us, finding a place to live and having jobs and careers!

So now I am looking at nicer apartments, farther away, that allow pets, and have covered parking. Some of them have gates.

And it's making me feel like an adult. But then I remember I dance in the shower, and I feel slightly less claustrophobic.

4.04.2008

Happy Birthday, Anji-kun~

You've got this waiting for you. (That sounds oddly sinister.)

4.03.2008

I might be in love with this lady.

Julia: "I brought you bacon!" :D

Huh.

I got a text at two AM from my *takes breath* high-school-ex-boyfriend's-best-friend's-younger-brother. It says:

"Funny story. My girlfriend and I broke up for real and you and I never hung out over Winter Break."
I've been sitting here trying to figure out how those two statements are related.

4.01.2008

Don't worry. Usually, we're talking about sex.

Me: Oh, damn. Really light headed all of a sudden.

Andy: meds?

Me: uh-huh

Andy: that sucks hun Im sorry

Me: It's okay. My liver's not failing. That's another possible side-effect!

Me: (That's less reassuring than it sounded in my head)

Andy: XD I know you'll be alright

Andy: I feel bad you get sick and hurt so much but I know youll be alright

Me: Thank you. For the concern and the faith. ^-^

Me: I'll be healthy one day. And then I will have a picnic!

Andy: yes!

Andy: and there will be ants XD

Me: Ants > tachycardia.

Andy: Hahahaha!!! You should write that down.

Me: I was considering blogging it.

Bitch.

Wren: "We could always just lie."
Maddo: "Matt is a convincing liar."
Wren: "So am I!"
Maddo: "Yeah, but it's more surprising coming from Matt."
Wren: "...HEY!"
Daryl: *sporfle*
