If it makes you feel any better, I never thought you were scary. This may or may not be related to the fact that the first time I ever really talked to you was when you were having a coughing fit in my stairwell. Coughing usually isn't that scary in the sense it puts someone off, more I was concerned you weren't going to die.
I also am not one easily intimidated. I can be quiet at times but more because I'm lost in thought than any sort of social cowering. I've dealt with my parents for too many years to be scared by strong personalities easily. As to why other people are scared by you, I don't know, maybe it's a rich (or wannabe rich) white kid thing. Growing up in an affluent society where politeness is more important than the actual substance of the message could have something to do with it. Guess I'm just more concerned with actual intent than the exact wording of the message. Kind of strange considering I'm now and English major...
